Torres was standing at the bottom of the porch steps when he came back out of the house, a bottle of beer in his hand. He dropped into the rocker, raised the bottle towards her in a toast.

‘It’s thirsty work being grilled by somebody who’s decided you’re guilty before they even meet you.’

‘Sorry about that.’

‘You’re here to do the good cop bit, are you? Seeing as he sort of stole the show with his bad cop act. I thought normally you broke it up a bit, took it in turns. Why not get yourself an egg timer so he doesn’t overrun next time?’

She put her fingers between her eyebrows as if stanching a headache. Then stared at him for a long time, lips pressed tightly together. Like she was in two minds whether to stay or join Peterson waiting for her in the car. He nearly offered her a beer to help her decide.

‘Do you make a habit of making things more difficult for yourself?’

‘Some people would say so, yes.’ He took a mouthful of beer, studied her over the bottom of the bottle. ‘You remind me of her actually.’

The sudden candid personal remark took her by surprise.

‘Really?’

‘Uh-huh. She’s a detective like you.’ He flicked the bottom of the bottle at the waiting car. ‘And her partner’s like Detective Imagination over there.’

‘You don’t get along?’

‘No.’

‘Why doesn’t that surprise me?’

He shook his head, it’s not worth the effort.

‘Couple of things,’ she said. ‘I want to apologize about Peterson. I’m not making excuses for him, but he’s got a daughter about the same age as Carmona. He’s having trouble with her at the moment and it’s all a bit too close to home.’

‘Maybe he should get a different job if he can’t leave it at home.’

She nodded, good of you to be so understanding.

‘Maybe you’re right. But I’m going to have to choose my moment carefully before I pass on your suggestion.’

He couldn’t stop himself from smiling with her.

‘What was the other thing you wanted to say?’

She’d come up onto the porch by now. Resting her butt against the railing, back to her partner in the car. She glanced around at him now, as if she was worried he could hear her from inside the car on the other side of the yard.

‘That didn’t go so well—’

‘It didn’t.’

‘—but you’ve got to admit the whole thing with the lug wrench is kind of hinky.’

He held up a hand, I couldn’t agree more.

‘I do. I admit it. It also happens to be the truth. That’s what happened, even if I can’t tell your partner who stole it and what they had for breakfast that morning. And anyway, it only matters if you think it was my lug wrench that was used to kill her. Assuming it wasn’t, seeing as it wasn’t me who did it, what does it matter where my wrench is? The fact that you’re asking about it again, even if it is in a more professional way, suggests you think I’m guilty, same as he does.
